With one Lansdale Parking Authority member present, it was a quick special meeting Thursday night.
With one Lansdale Parking Authority member present, it was a quick special meeting Thursday night, where the authority accepted public comment on a grant application for funding through the Keystone Communities Program. The grant funding will go toward the redevelopment of Madison Lot. The authority held the meeting, of which Tom Work was the sole authority presence, to solicit public comment from citizens prior to submission of the grant application. There was only one commenter, a student from Montgomery County Community College. He asked what the grant was for and where it would be applied in Lansdale. This grant is separate and distinct from a March 2013 Keystone Communities Program grant submission by Lansdale Borough for $500,000. …

Should Congress not act by March 1, a series of automatic cuts will take effect that affect thousands of middle class jobs, and cut vital services for children, seniors, people with mental illness and our men and women in uniform
If the sequester goes through on March 1, it could mean massive cuts to emergency services, mental health services, school funding, senior citizen services and more. Locally, the various National Alliance on Mental Illness programs continue to advocate for change before March 1. If sequestration goes into effect, more than 373,000 mentally ill adults and children could go untreated. The result could be homelessness, increased crime and increased hospitalizations. Carol Caruso, executive director of NAMI Montgomery County, said mental health and substance abuse programs could be cut by about 5 percent. Tack that onto the 10 percent cut that occurred in the Pennsylvania budget. "There is more slicing away at services in that area that are …

Take SEPTA to and from Montgomeryville? Your routes are safe. SEPTA announced Wednesday that Routes 94 and 132 will not be eliminated as part of a plan to make up for lost county funding. There are changes, however, that benefit evening shift workers and Montgomery County Community College students, according to PhillyBurbs.com. According to PhillyBurbs.com, the greatest change on Routes 94 and 132 will be on Sundays, as service will be limited due to low ridership. The Route 94 is to and from Montgomery Mall and Chestnut Hill, with stops at Montgomery County Community College and Ambler. Route 132 is the route for Telford, Montgomery Mall and Lansdale. Changes go into effect Feb. 17, 2013. Here are the proposed changes, which have yet to …

The grant would help with funding of equipment and officer overtime in the Montgomery Township Regional DUI Enforcement Team
Montgomery Township Supervisors last week approved the submission of a DUI grant application for $59,992, which will boost funding for equipment and aid officers who are a part of the Montgomery Township Regional DUI Task Force. Montgomery Township Acting Chief Scott Bendig said the grant is a continuation of DUI grants from previous years. “This grant includes funding for equipment and overtime for officers to conduct DUI enforcement activities, including DUI checkpoints and DUI roving patrols,” Bendig told the board. Supervisors Chairman Candyce Chimera asked how likely the department is to get the grant. “We’ve done very well,” Bendig said. “This grant is actually going to be $6 less than we had last year. It looks pretty good in …

AMS Planning and Research revealed Thursday night there isn't much interest from local organizations for the center, but there is a demand for film, music and visual arts in Lansdale
So, who wants to run 311 W. Main Street in Lansdale? AMS Planning and Research revealed Thursday night to the 311 W. Main Task Force and five residents in attendance there is no major interest from local organizations to use the 311 W. Main Street location, but there is a demand that needs to be met in a non-competitive market. That demand is mainly film, music and visual arts. "Theere is general community support for the concept," said AMS Planning and Research Principal Michele Walter. "There is definitely an endless supply and demand for the facility. User product demand is limited. There's not a huge list of people that said they are interested." The venture won't be successful, however, without leadership and partnership. The number …

A scam intended to deceive people into providing their social security numbers, banking details, and other personal information by misleading them to believe that the government will help pay their utility bills has appeared in the greater Philadelphia region, PECO said last week. The scam, which has been reportedly taking place through social media such as Facebook, text messages, telephone, and U.S. Mail, claims that United States President Barack Obama is providing funding to help customers pay their utility bills. “We want to make our customers aware of this scam and any potential issues so they can protect themselves from becoming victims of identity theft and other fraudulent activities,” said Mark Alden, PECO vice president of …

Think you don’t need a healthy public library system? Think again. The recessionary economy of the past few years has put tremendous pressure on public resources that depend upon local taxes. Budgets for public schools, public parks, a variety of community events and other community institutions have been threatened with underfunding or no funding at all. Of particular concern to us at Univest Corporation is the underfunding of our communities’ local libraries. The Indian Valley Public Library, the North Wales Area Library and the Upper Perkiomen Valley Library are prime examples. Next year, each of these important community institutions will be challenged to find new funding as money from state and local governments is expected to …

The board will vote on the final budget June 21. If approved, it could mean $83 more for homeowners in yearly taxes
If approved June 21, a proposed $207.6 million North Penn School District budget that was preliminarily approved 5-2 Thursday will carry a 2.7 percent tax increase with it. According to an article in The Reporter, Robert Schoch, the director of business administration, said that increase means an additional $83 in yearly taxes for the Montgomery County homeowner. North Penn School Board members Joseph Sullivan and Frank O'Donnell voted against the preliminary budget. Two school board members were absent for the vote: Vice President Timothy Kerr and John Schilling. In the article, Sullivan was quoted as such: “We are not addressing the core issues that need to be addressed. Spending has risen more than (the money) we’re getting. We’re …

AMS Planning will conduct a survey and interviews with potential users over the next five months
The direction and future of 311 W. Main Street will be revealed by the end of August. By that time, the 311 W. Main Task Force will have a final report and recommendation from AMS Planning on how to move forward with the programming, management, funding and other options for 311 W. Main Street in Lansdale. The consultant's first task was to get public input from those who care about the future of the building. It did just that at the Tuesday night task force meeting at the parks and recreation building. While a light turnout - about one-three-hundredth of the entire population of the borough attended - it didn't detract from the purpose of the meeting. Lynette Turner, of AMS Planning, said the public input was the first step in the …
