Giant Food Stores wants to build 10 gas pumps and a 5,000-square-foot convenience store — all open 24/7 — near Five Points Plaza on the property of the former 309 & Horsham Road Plaza, according to Dan Sokil of The Reporter. Montgomery Township Supervisors authorized Jan. 28 a continuance of a public hearing to March to consider a conditional use application from Giant to permit construction of the gas station on the site, according to the article. A lone suspect robbed the BP at Sumneytown Pike and Broad Street at gunpoint Thursday night and fled with cash toward Sumneytown Pike
Upper Gwynedd Police are seeking a man who used a handgun to rob the BP gas station at 868 Sumneytown Pike in Upper Gwynedd Thursday at 9:52 p.m. Police said the suspect entered the store and asked for a pack of Newports. The clerk opened the register and the man produced a black semi-automatic handgun, police said. He then jumped on the counter and pointed the gun at the clerk, police said. He then reached into the register and took an undetermined amount of cash. He then left the store and walked toward Sumneytown Pike, police said. A Montgomery Township K9 tracked the suspect to a nearby parking lot, police said. It is believed the man left from that lot in a vehicle. Congestion Alert! Blight Alert! Along Route 309 north on the south side of the SEPTA rail tracks, a developer has proposed building another large gas station and market — barely 100 yards from the Wawa gas station and market on the same side of the road! This developer does not seem to care that traffic along 309 and North Broad Street already gets backed up multiple times a day, and that the addition of a 20-pump "gas-n-go" will add to this congestion. Nor do they seem to care that a 24-hour gas station and market will bring with it safety concerns as well as light and noise pollution to the nearby families along Arbour Circle and Walnut Street.
