Eagle Scout candidate Matt Pellegrino, of East Norriton, organized a literal troop of volunteer friends, Scouts, family and community members last Saturday to right tombstones—and to rebuild part of the crypt of the first American-born Lutheran pastor.
A weight has finally been lifted off the shoulders of Silas and Barbara Land. All it took was a literal troop of about 30 volunteer Scouts, friends, family, business owners and community members, some elbow grease, and determined leadership from Eagle Scout candidate Matt Pelligrino, 16. The tripod and block and tackle helped a bit too. "It allows one man to do the work of 10," said one volunteer. "We've done six or seven so far. Even some doubles." Perhaps more impressive is the refurbishment of part of the crypt of the first American-born pastor to enter the Lutheran ministry: Rev. Jacob Van Buskirk. Pellegrino, of Troop 98 in Whitpain Township, was re-righting history in The Old Yellow Church Yard and The Old Cemetery-West at Prospect …

Owen Murphy's mother was saved by a bone marrow transplant. The soon-to-be Eagle Scout returned the favor by hosting a community effort
In October 2009, Sandy Murphy received a bone marrow transplant from a donor on the bone marrow registry. On Sunday, her son Owen gave back to the registry in an incredible way. With family and friends in attendance, Owen hosted a bone marrow registry drive at the Corpus Christi Church in Upper Gwynedd. He manned the front door from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., greeting everyone with an eager handshake and a smile. When asked about the reasoning behind the drive, Owen explained that his mother was fortunate to find a donor match in the registry, and that "many times, matches are hard to find." "People have misconceptions about donating marrow," he said, "and I think that discourages people from joining the registry." The …

Soon-to-be Eagle Scout and Methacton senior Owen Murphy hosting bone marrow drive Sunday at Corpus Christi Church
When the time came to select a project for his Eagle Rank, Owen Murphy chose one that was close to his heart. Murphy will host a bone marrow registry drive Sunday at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, in honor of his mother, who received a bone marrow transplant from a registry donor in 2009. “I learned about the registry, and the lacking number of matches, so I wanted to help add donors to the registry,” Murphy said. To achieve the Eagle Rank – the highest rank available in Boy Scouts of America – scouts must perform a project focusing on leadership and helping the community. “You must come up with a project that benefits the community, and puts you in a leadership position,” Murphy said, “after which, you must have it approved by …

Abington haunts Methacton in overtime win; North Penn defeats Engineering & Science to clinch championship in non-league tournament
Since 2005, North Penn has hosted the Chris Smith Holiday Memorial Tournament, dedicated to the former North Penn basketball player who lost his life in a car accident with two Pennridge students in Fall 2005. On Wednesday night, North Penn defeated Engineering & Science 59 to 35 in the championship game. The championship is not part of the league standings. In a prior consolation match, the Abington Ghosts scared off the Methacton Warriors in an overtime match, 59 to 58. Teams are invited to participate in the tournament each year, and are not always part of the Suburban One league. A tournament program book stated that according to his parents, Smith loved basketball, but mostly loved life in general. Former North Penn Knights basketball…
