NPHS Honors Literature at First 'Lit Fest'

The Knight Crier at North Penn High School covered the events of the first-ever literature festival in the auditorium on Feb. 21

On Thursday, Feb. 21, juniors in North Penn High School's Honors English program celebrated prose and literature during its first-annual "Lit Fest." Students re-enacted scenes, competed in drama readings and a book cover design contest were just some of the events. According to Knight Crier executive editor Bridget Phillips, the event emphasized "literature’s position in the incredible English curriculum in our school and overall district." 'Blue Crew' of 1,046 Head Into the Future

Caps off to the North Penn High School Class of 2011.

In his valedictory speech Wednesday, Julian Pei told his fellow North Penn High School graduates not to fear end-of-the-world prognosticators, but to bravely face the challenges that lie ahead. “The world is a tough place to be in right now,” Pei said, citing rising gasoline prices and a sluggish economy as proof. “Sometimes, it feels like our country is just unraveling.” He mentioned Harold Camping, the radio broadcaster who recently predicted the Rapture would occur on May 21, thus bringing an end to the world. “We made it through (May 21) with no problems, right?” Pei said. “Will 2012 be the same?” The 56th annual commencement was held on the high school campus in Crawford Stadium. Crowds of people filled the bleachers or lined up …

Mock Tragedy Strikes North Penn High School

North Penn Seniors learn the consequences of drinking and driving

On Tuesday morning, near the bus circle of North Penn High School, a bloody right arm stuck out from under a white sheet that was draped grimly over the high schooler's body. His feet were still inside the passenger side of the maroon Hyundai. A pool of blood settled into the pores of the asphalt near his head. Closeby, there was another victim: a young girl in a pink plaid coat, her right foot bent to the side following the ejection. The front-end of the Hyundai was smashed beyond recognition. The same goes for the purple Plymouth sedan that met it head-on. The driver of that car wasn't so lucky either. A Towamencin cop sped onto the scene. The loud sirens of Towamencin Vol. Fire Co. followed behind. Eventually, a PennStar MedEvac …

I watched the aftermath video. I must say that it was very well done, and realistic. I do hope that not just the students, but all who view it can learn from it, and see what the actual effects of bad decisions can lead to.   more ›

Whiz Kid

A Talented Trio of Thespians

Our Whiz Kids this week are North Penn High School Theatre's Erica Tolton, Dani Corradetti and Justin Dumke, who, as a team, took first place at the recent Shakespeare Festival High School Competition

Erica Tolton, Dani Corradetti and Justin Dumke know their destinies are not held in the stars, but in themselves. Shakespeare, whose quote is paraphrased above, would be proud of this week's trio of Montgomeryville-Lansdale Patch Whiz Kids. To be or not to be wasn’t a question at the recent Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival high school competition at DeSales University in Center Valley. The students in Andrea Roney’s theatre class were either going to win or lose at the festival. They came, they performed, they conquered first place as a team for the highest total combined scores. For all four years of the annual festival, a North Penn High School theatre team has won one of the top three spots. North Penn is the only school to have …

NPSD Financial Outlook meeting reviewed 'fiscal reality' for 2011-12

Dietrich and Schoch discuss some wise choices in tough times, including Act 1 and employee engagement

North Penn School District Superintendent Dr. Curt Dietrich and Director of Business Administration Bob Schoch led a district Financial Outlook Information Meeting Monday night at North Penn High School. The goals for the meeting were to help community members have a better understanding of Act 1 and the “fiscal reality” related to preparing a school district budget. Dietrich and Schoch also reviewed factors that will affect spending and income for the 2011–12 school year. Act 1 index for the 2011-12 fiscal year is at 1.4 percent About 80 percent of the school district’s budget is received from local real estate tax revenue. The North Penn School District Board of School Directors cannot raise real estate taxes for the 2011-12 budget by …

I am glad to hear this open forum and inclusion to this difficult process. I hope that the School Board can find ways to cut some expenses without hurting the students. Our students deserve the best we can give them and even with the economy the way it is, quality education should remain a primary focus.   more ›

North Penn boys hoops locked in tight conference battle

The key is keeping the team focused, Coach Ron Hassler said

Baseball has the dog days of August.  The boys basketball team at North Penn has its dog days in January.      There is excitement when the season opens in December.  There is also the thrill of the playoffs at the end of February and the early part of March.  For Knights coach Ron Hassler, the key is keeping his team focused in January as the Knights look to keep pace in what is shaping up to be a tight conference race.      “This is the time of the year that we call the dog days,” said Hassler.  “It’s where some teams separate themselves from others.  I would think over the next two weeks we’ll have a better idea of who is in a real position to make a run at the title.”      The Knights are one of three teams batting for the top …
