Winning Numbers: Montgomery Elementary Sweeps Math Tournament

Students and teachers knew the formula to math success Wednesday at A.M. Kulp Elementary.

It doesn't take a math whiz to figure out this formula: Montgomery Elementary School swept the "Math 24" Tournament Wednesday. That adds up to three smart kids, and one proud school principal. "These students worked so hard for this," principal Sean Arney said of Jared Culp, Scott Schwartz and Eric Mondelblatt, who respectively took the top three spots in the tournament at A.M. Kulp Elementary School. "This is really a testament to their teachers who prepared all the students for this comeptition. This is their passion."   "Math 24" uses a deck of cards with four numbers on each card, explained Rosa Apple, a teacher's assistant at Kulp. Students must use all four numbers in any combination of addition, subtraction, multiplication and …

Gwyn-Nor Wants Your Clothes

For a second straight year, the elementary school is hosting a multiple-day clothing drive

On a beautiful Saturday morning, Becky Conrad was seated in the back of a nearly-full U-Haul truck in the parking lot of Gwyn-Nor Elementary, as vehicle after vehicle pulled into the lot to donate clothes. "Look at the size of this truck!  And we just started!" said Conrad.  "I think this is a good one for us." Indeed, only four hours into the clothing drive, the U-Haul had little to no space left, forcing Conrad and her partner, Cathy Halberg, to move donations to a secondary collection point, a few parking spaces away. "This weekend is the mommy market, which helps.  People come out with stuff they didn't sell, and throw it right in the truck," said Conrad with a laugh. The amount should come as no surprise, as the school raised more …

Hello Cupcake!

Penndale students compete to see who can create the most unique cupcake

For the past week, there's been a severe case of aching sweet teeths and drooling mouths at Penndale Middle School -- and it usually occurs right near the main office. Located within the hallway near the main office, students pass by an enclosed display that features more than 50 unique, hand-crafted cupcakes.  The display is the result of a project by the Family Consumer Science 9th-grade majors, who were given a little more than a week to design and create their own cupcake. "I just love that they can be creative. I mean, look at the cactus!  I've never seen anything like it," said Rachel Pfost, an FSC teacher at Penndale and co-organizer of the cupcake competition. On the last day of voting, Pfost proudly went through each and every …

Eagle Scout Whiz: Matthew Gibbs

The 18-year-old Eagle Scout beautified Lansdale parks by planting more than 20 trees and repairing benches

You can breathe easier out there, knowing that Matthew Gibbs made the parks in Lansdale a little more beautiful. Gibbs, 18, is an Eagle Scout with Troop 62, sponsored by St. John's United Church of Christ. He recently completed his service project in the borough. "I planted 23 trees in parks around Lansdale," he said. Those parks are Fourth Street Park, White's Road Park and Wissahickon Park. "I wanted to help my community as an Eagle Scout," the North Penn High School senior said. "I was in Boy Scouts a while, so I wanted to take the next step." Gibbs approached Lansdale Borough Parks and Recreation Director Carl Saldutti about what projects needed completion in the borough. "He said there were all these trees in the nursery, and nothing …

CONGRATULATIONS ---- Achieving the rank of eagle scout is a significant accomplishment -- your eagle project aided the community in planting the trees. It completed a job that had been uncompleted for a period of time and you and your assistants saw a need and completed the project. Good job -- Tony and Sue should be very proud of your accomplishment. Gary Gardner (Tony's uncle)   more ›
