Lansdale Borough Councilman Jack Hansen said he, his family and friends 'have become very upset' with Strahm's constant attacks.
It is that time of the year again! Political season is upon us and some people will say anything to get your attention. As anyone who knows me knows, I am a Democrat, and I support Democrats for election. I have done this all of my life, and will probably continue to support Democrats for the rest of my life. I have been an active Democrat in Lansdale for 28 years. I was a committee person for 21 years. I attended almost every committee meeting, and volunteered for voter registration, fundraising, lit drops, envelope stuffing, and any other duties expected of a committee person. I would knock on doors for our candidates, and invite new people in my neighborhood to join the party. I have a plaque hanging on the wall in my office. It is the…

I would like to give a big THANKS to everyone that came out to help make the Lansdale Cruise Night another great borough event that Lansdale can be proud of and an enjoyable fundraising event for Manna on Main Street. With perfect weather on hand the streets of Lansdale was a rolling car show. A large variety of vehicles cruised back and forth through town while onlookers filled the sidewalk benches. Some further THANKS to the Borough of Lansdale, the Lansdale Police Department, Discover Lansdale and especially all of the Lansdale area businesses that gave in some form in support of the cruise. And a final THANKS to my co-organizers Debbie Henning, Ray Liberto and Tara McNally, along with a handful of other people that helped out. And …

Kareem Afzal, chair of the Manna on Main Street board of directors, looks introspectively at Manna's past and gears up for its future

As we enter the final month of celebration of Manna on Main Street’s 30th year of providing hot meals, food assistance and other types of emergency aid to those in need throughout the North Penn area, we pause to look introspectively as to where we’ve come from and to share where we’re going with the community. Exciting things abound. For the first two years, operations took place from the basement of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Lansdale. When the building next door was donated by a parishioner, Manna on Main Street came to life. At the outset, soup was served two days a week and government surplus food was distributed. Day-to-day operations were handled by volunteers. In the early 1990s, a part-time coordinator was hired to …

Mick Wynne, Democratic candidate for the 53rd Legislative District, issued the following statement on Thursday

Mick Wynne, Democratic candidate for the 53rd Legislative District, issued the following statement on Thursday after Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson ruled to uphold the law that requires every Pennsylvania voter to show a valid photo ID before being allowed to vote. PA House Republicans, in passing the Voter ID law earlier this year, have decided to step in front of many of us or our neighbors at the polls this election day, in a massive and expensive effort to fix something that isn’t broken. House Bill 934 requires you to present a photo ID when you vote, and whether you mind handing over your driver’s license or not, it’s hard to see why it’s necessary at all. When asked in court about how common in-person voter fraud is in our…

Local author Gary Kaschak recounts how he was moved by one Mater Dei Catholic School 12-year-old student's inspirational essay about his hero Darren Drolsbaugh, his deaf baseball travel teammate

For the past eight years, I have had the absolute privilege of sponsoring an essay contest for the 7th grade students at the former St. Stanislaus School, now Mater Dei, in Lansdale, based upon a pair of inspirational fiction novels I’d written years ago. The essay contest has evolved gradually over this time period. Fresh categories created outside the realm of rewarding just the best writers has opened up new opportunities for its participants. With the eager support and advice from Mater Dei teacher and huge supporter, Bonnie Marino, this leverage has enabled me - as the single judge in the competition - enhanced opportunities to reward more students for their writing efforts. The fairly new essay category of "Inspirational Writing" was…

A letter to the editor of one resident's opinion on the Supreme Court Affordable Healthcare Act ruling
The Supreme Court’s victorious healthcare ruling today ranks right up there with the passage of the Women’s Right to Vote! In the past few years it seems the Republican voice has been to uphold the rights and privileges of business over their Christian responsibility of caring for the people. Today the Supreme Court reversed that voice and upheld their responsibility to the people of this great nation. In these bickering days of uncompromised attitudes, it’s so easy to forget our moral and social obligation to each other and think only of ourselves. This country did not become great because we were uncompromising, but rather, because we were passionate about working together to bring about a great nation for the people by the people. So …

The truth about those so-called flesh-eating, fear-mongering lunatics

Everything I know about the Tea Party is as follows: they are flesh-eating, fear-mongering racist lunatics, and they drink the blood of young virgins. Oh, and they hate the media. Armed with this understanding I decided to attended my first Tea Party meeting, figuring as a white, already-deflowered male who simply happened to be a reporter, my chances of survival were better than most. Still, I did not identify myself as a reporter, not so much out of cowardice, although there’s that, but more because I wanted everyone at their best behavior, unvarnished. Nothing brings out the worst in people than knowing they are talking to a reporter. I wanted truth not a press release. Turns out I got both. So it was that I stepped inside the Rock …

You obviously have no idea who you are talking about. Richard is both a close friend as well as our agent and has gone out of his way to help us whenever we need it. He gives up his personal time to share his love and knowledge of this town to the many people that are interested. Richard actually cares about this town and making it a great place to live. Can you say that?   more ›
