You now know it better as Airport Square Shopping Center. Hence, the namesake.
This photo, courtesy of Jim Garrahan and “Old Images of Montgomery County PA,” shows Airport Square Shopping Center when it was Montgomeryville Airport on April 8, 1978. The intersection at the left is Route 202/Upper State Road and Route 309. The runway then is the current area of Best Buy, Old Navy and Five Below now. The white building at the bottom of the runway is the old Charles Chips factory. You can even see all the distinctive trucks lined up behind it. The quarry is at the upper right. In the background is the red-and-white-checkered water tower that was at the former Montgomeryville Mart. The church at left is the former Montgomery Square United Methodist Church. Do you remember seeing "Gremlins," "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," "E.T." or "Star Wars" for the first time? Can you imagine seeing lightsabers and Darth Vader on a big screen as you drive down 309? This photo was posted by Jim Garrahan on the "Old Images of Montgomery County PA" Facebook page. It is an aerial photo of the 309 Drive-In in Montgomery Township on April 8, 1978. Personnel from the Montgomery Township Public Works department and the Fire Department of Montgomery Township had attempted to soak up some of the fuel spill with sand and could be seen accessing the sewer through a manhole. The driver of the tractor-trailer, Mike Wells of Lubbock, Tx., said he had been proceeding northbound on Route 309 at about 35-40 miles per hour when he was struck on the right side by a black Toyota Tundra pickup truck headed south on Upper State Road. Chief Richard J. Brady Bridge was dedicated Friday morning at a ceremony on the Route 202 Parkway, featuring state Reps. Kate Harper and Todd Stephens, and state Sen. Stewart Greenleaf
It’s going to be the only time Richard Brady is OK with being runover. The former Montgomery Township Police Chief is now forever a part of the Route 202 Parkway — at least in name and honor. State Sen. Stewart Greenleaf, State Rep. Kate Harper and State Rep. Todd Stephens unveiled a sign Friday morning designating the Route 202 Parkway bridge over Route 309 as “Chief Richard J. Brady Bridge.” According to The Reporter’s Bradley Schlegel, Brady was at a loss for words at the ceremony. In his speech, Brady said it was a “great honor” and that few people get to see this kind of honor “while they are still alive,” according to the article.
