A North Penn High School student was taken to Lansdale Hospital on Monday afternoon after the school bus in which she was a passenger was rear-ended at one of the exits from the high school's campus. The bus, number 63, suffered minor cosmetic damage to its back end when it was struck by a black Ford Taurus, which had to be towed from the scene. Sergeant Paul Wiechec of the Towamencin Police Department said the Taurus had been struck by a red Pontiac Firebird whose operator had admitted mistakenly stepping on the accelerator and brake pedal at the same time. The impact of the Firebird then propelled the Taurus into the back of the bus. The drivers of the Firebird and the Taurus were said to be unhurt. No other injuries were reported.

"Motorists should avoid distractions and obey school bus and school zone traffic laws so we have the safest possible environment for students boarding and exiting buses." By law, drivers approaching from all directions are required to stop at least 10 feet from a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended. The only exception is when a driver encounters a school bus stopping on the opposite side of a highway clearly separated …

Parents and first-time students learn about the potential risks of riding a school bus.
Despite the ugly weather, groups of parents and their children attended the 11th annual "K-Day" event Thursday morning at Walton Farm Elementary. The program aims to familiarize kindergarten-aged children with riding a school bus, as well as the potential hazards associated with mounting and dismounting the vehicle. "What we're doing today is taking the children out on a school bus ride around the neighborhood, so they get used to the sounds of the school bus, the air brakes, and the way the bus rides," said Marianne Cleary, North Penn School District's transportation coordinator. Throughout the trip, a second bus driver serves as a narrator, explaining the safety rules such as the importance of staying seated and keeping your head and …
