By April 2013 — and in preparation for Obamacare — Abington Health will have acquired nonprofit North Penn Visiting Nurse Association. Officials from both Abington Health and North Penn VNA signed a letter of intent Friday, Nov. 2. The amount of purchase was not released. Abington Health is the umbrella corporation that owns Abington Memorial Hospital and Lansdale Hospital. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, North Penn VNA's net income dropped from $626,993 to $277,787 in year ending June 30, 2011, as reported in its Form 990 tax return. Both sides have chosen to end discussions regarding a possible merger

Together we had a bold vision that we believe would have served our community well. While we are disappointed, we believe this decision is in the best interest of both organizations. Abington Health and Holy Redeemer sign a 'letter of intent' to form a new health system. Abington, Holy Redeemer and Lansdale hospitals will remain open, each with its own staff
Abington Health and Holy Redeemer Health System today announced a letter of intent to form a new regional health system. Abington Health President and CEO Laurence Merlis and Holy Redeemer President and CEO Michael Laign made the announcement at the Abington Township building, which is across from Abington Memorial Hospital. Abington Memorial, Holy Redeemer and Lansdale hospitals will continue to serve their respective communities, according to Laign, and each will continue to have its own staff. Talks were in the works for about a year. The yet-to-be-named regional health system will now enter a “due diligence period,” which will last up to three months. Local hospitals were ranked according to rating system developed by nonprofit coalition of employers and other groups that purchase health benefits
Abington Health-Lansdale Hospital was given a grade of "A" by a national group focused on ranking and rating hospitals' performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. The ranking of overall performance listed Lansdale Hospital under its prior name - Central Montgomery Medical Center. You can read the details of Lansdale Hospital's ranking by clicking this link. The ratings were given out and announced Monday by the Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. For the same reason they tried to merge with Holy Redeemer - they will not be able to survive otherwise. Obamacare only addresses some uninsured, imposes some regulation on health insurance, and levies a whole bunch of taxes, but it does absolutely nothing to control the cost of healthcare or any of the real, true, systemic problems facing the industry.   more ›
