FDMT On Fire at Township Meeting

The Fire Department of Montgomery Township had a stellar night Monday at the supervisors meeting: swearing-in fire police ceremonies, pet oxygen mask donations and money, money, money.

Fire Department of Montgomery Township had a pretty good night at the supervisors meeting Monday. First, the combination department received a $5,000 donation from Teva Pharmaceuticals. Then, it grew its fire police force by two with the swearing-ins of volunteers Jane Weinhardt and Mike Goldberg. The final acclaim for FDMT involved 10 unique, but necessary, pieces of fire livesaving equipment—for our four-legged friends. Stray Cat Blues, the nonprofit non-kill feline shelter, which has a main display at PetSmart in Montgomery Township, donated 10 pet oxygen masks to FDMT.  This means FDMT is also WAG’N O2 FUR LIFE.  That is, the department, on behalf of Stray Cat Blues, has enrolled in the Wag’N O2 Fur Life program. The nationwide program…

FDMT Asking for Help in Long-Range Replacement Plan

Director of Fire Services Rick Lesniak and Fire Department of Montgomery Township Chief Bill Wiegman told Montgomery Township Supervisors Monday that it will soon be time to replace a 23-year-old fire engine

Fire Department of Montgomery Township informed Montgomery Township Supervisors Monday night that it needs to plan now for the replacement of two fire engines and other fire equipment. According to Dan Sokil of The Reporter, township Director of Fire Services Rick Lesniak and FDMT Chief Bill Wiegman presented an assessment by VFIS Education, Training and Consulting that looked at a long-term apparatus replacement plan. The assessment also analyzed maintenance records for FDMT’s five vehicles, which are co-owned by Montgomery Township, according to the article. Engine 18-1 was built in 1989, according to the article, and has been with FDMT since its inception in 2002. This engine is at the top of the long-term replacement list, but it is …

FDMT Reapplying for SAFER Grant, 2011 App Denied

Fire Department of Montgomery Township's SAFER grant application for fiscal year 2011 was denied by the Department of Homeland Security. Director of Fire Services Rick Lesniak is reapplying for this year's grant

Fire Department of Montgomery Township is determined to obtain a SAFER grant from the Department of Homeland Security so that it can increase its firefighter personnel by two. In February, Director of Fire Services Rick Lesniak received the OK from township supervisors to apply for a $352,000 SAFER grant from the government, in order to hire two full-time firefighters and purchase $30,000 in protective equipment for up to 10 new volunteers. Lesniak informed supervisors Monday night that the grant was denied, but asked permission to apply again for the Fiscal Year 2012. "At the end of last week, the Department of Homeland Security announced that there were almost 2,000 applications requesting $1.7 billion in funding. Unfortunately, there …

FDMT Honored for Dog Rescue

It's usually firefighters rescuing cats stuck in trees - this time it's a dog stuck underground

They don’t call them weiner dogs for nothing. It was Candy’s skinny and long frame that got her in some perilous trouble on July 15. Being a dachshund, Candy has an instilled desire to dig after creatures like groundhogs and badgers; Dachshund is in fact German for “badger hound.” Laureen Giampa’s daughter had just let out Candy and her fatter companion outside, when she witnessed the duo chase after a groundhog. “We had some groundhogs, apparently some very large ones that everyone in the neighborhood was talking about,” said Giampa. “I’m the only one that didn’t see them.” The groundhog ducked into its underground burrow – and Candy followed right behind. “Fortunately, for the other one, she’s too fat to fit in the hole,” said Giampa. “…

Emergency Responders Honored for Hurricane Response

Supervisors honored volunteers and employees of township fire and police departments, as well as emergency medical services and public works agencies

Montgomery Township supervisors, along with Director of Fire Services Rick Lesniak, recognized township public works, fire and police personnel, as well as local emergency medical responders, for their efforts during Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. Lesniak told of how the National Weather Service warned residents on Aug. 23 on the East Coast of the potential impact of a Category 3 hurricane. As each day passed, the NWS warned residents of the potential destruction of the storm should it make landfall. Meteorologists also warned Delaware Valley residents of the threat of record flooding. "Given these reports, the various township departments and emergency service organizations began taking the following steps working cooperatively …

Montgomery Twp. Fire Relief Association Receives $414,000

Money will be used for equipment purchases, training, insurance

The Fire Department of Montgomery Township Fire Relief Association has received an annual allocation of $414,125.20 to be used for future purchases of fire equipment and for costs related with firefighter training. Volunteer fire relief associations in Pennsylvania receive state aid from a 2-percent state tax on casualty and fire insurance purchased by state residents from insurance companies out-of-state. “This allocation that comes to the township from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is a share of the foreign fire insurance tax,” said township manager Larry Gregan. The allocation this is a 62 percent increase over 2010, he said. The reason has to do with the collection of the tax. Gregan said it is now collected six months in advance. “…
