North Penn PAL Holds Successful Kickoff Event

The new Police Athletic League got some parents and teens to commit to being a part of the partnership between law enforcement and the community Saturday at Montgomery Mall

It's once in a blue moon that shoppers will witness an Upper Gwynedd Township Police motorcycle making laps inside the Montgomery Mall. When Officer Fred Lynch briefly wailed the siren, it turned some heads. He greeted shoppers as he drove by, and then said hello to him on his return lap. Lynch then parked the cycle outside the lower level of JC Penney's; before long, children and teens were taking a seat on the cycle themselves, blaring the horn and causing more to turn their heads. Often, those people would see what all the noise was about — and leave with their child signed up for free as a new member of the nonprofit North Penn Police Athletic League. North Penn Area PAL Promoting Recruitment

The four-month-old North Penn Area Police Athletic League is gearing up for a huge recruitment event at Montgomery Mall on November 10

Towamencin Township Police Officer Patrick Horne claims he remains undefeated with the quick pick-up basketball games he seldomly plays with area youths during his patrol of neighborhoods in the township, like Morgandale, for instance. The more and more he patrols, the more and more he sees youths looking for something to do. He'd much rather see them showing up to a basketball court than showing up on a police report. It was this desire to mentor area youth that led Horne to approach Chief Tim Dickinson with the idea of forming a North Penn Area Police Athletic League. "It's a way for the police to give back," Horne said. "I stop at neighborhoods and talk to them. I find out their parents work all day, and they have nothing to do except …
