Community Races to End Hunger — Even with Carts

Manna on Main Street held its second 5K Race to End Hunger and 1-Mile Fun Run Saturday at Knapp Elementary School in Lansdale. There was also a 120-yard relay race using shopping carts stocked with donated goods

It's not easy to run in flip-flops — and even harder when you're pushing a shopping cart filled with donated goods in a 120-yard relay race. Yet Emily Beynon, 13, and Kim Ehleben, 13, of Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Parish School in Montgomery Township — along with classmates Samantha Splendido, 12, and Jackie Campbell, 14 — became the victors of the relay, beating out Manna on Main Street at the nonprofit's second annual 5K Race to End Hunger and 1-Mile Fun Run fundraiser event Saturday at Knapp Elementary School. "Painfully," was Beynon's answer on how she was able to race in flip-flops. "No clue," was Ehleben's answer to the same question. The group of girls were at the fundraiser to collect canned goods as part of a senior project for …

Knapp Road School Signal Hits Roadblock A Third Time

Councilman Rich DiGregorio is adamant about getting a flashing school signal for Knapp Road, but without Montgomery Township on board, it's a dead issue

The third time isn't a charm for Lansdale Councilman Rich DiGregorio. DiGregorio's request for the public safety committee to look at a flashing school crossing on Knapp Road has been denied for a third time in four years in a 3-0 vote. The issue: Montgomery Township and North Penn School District need to be part of an interagency agreement to install the lights. Knapp Road is the dividing line in that part of town between Lansdale Borough and Montgomery Township. At the public safety committee meeting this month, Lansdale Police Chief Robert McDyre estimated the cost of install at $60,000 split three ways. Public Safety Committee member and council Vice President Paul Clemente voted to deny the request for a third time. "This has been …

Hi Sarah - This is why the westbound side is 35 mph and the eastbound is 25 mph. And I too like the grated turns - I would've loved it more if they did it before my crash at one of them the day after Hurricane Sandy   more ›

Floyd Cooper Drawn Back to North Penn

The Easton illustrator of more than 2,000 book covers visited Knapp Elementary Tuesday as part of Black History Month

Something keeps on drawing illustrator Floyd Cooper back to North Penn. Last year, Cooper painted a positive picture of determination for students at Oak Park Elementary, during his appearance there for Black History Month. Cooper returned again on Tuesday, this time to Knapp Elementary, where he spent the day talking to primary school students about never giving up. “I’m here talking about my work and instilling my message of hope and not giving up,” Cooper said. “It’s about holding fast to one’s dreams.” Dawn McFadden, reading specialist at Knapp, said Cooper’s presence was two-fold. “We felt it was important to bring an author in to expose children to Mr. Cooper’s work and writing and illustrating, and the importance of Mr. Cooper’s …

Home & School from Home

Knapp Elementary offers live broadcast of its monthly Home and School Association meetings through KnappTV. One occurs tonight at 7:30.

They want their KnappTV. The North Penn School District has a goal of engaging families and the community on a daily basis as a way to support student success. The district does this through many efforts: outreach efforts with the North Penn Valley Boys and Girls Club, the North Penn United Way and various ethnic coalitions; partnerships between elementary schools and pre-schools; volunteerism; the Community Forum Committee and FACE Time, or Family and Community Engagement workshops. An offshoot of FACE is eFACE - electronic Family and Community Engagement. One such example is that of KnappTV of Knapp Elementary School. The school operates KnappTV much like a regular news broadcast; it is a daily effort each week. All equipment used for …

Flashing School Zone on Knapp Road Being Revisited

Councilman Rich DiGregorio said Montgomery Township, North Penn School District are now on board to fund installation of safety devices on Knapp Road

Lansdale Councilman Rich DiGregorio is determined to get a flashing school zone on Knapp Road next to Knapp Elementary. The problem: Knapp Road is the dividing line for Lansdale Borough and Montgomery Township. Lansdale cannot install a flashing school zone area and police the area without agreement from Montgomery Township. “We have a school zone. We have support from Montgomery Township, I was told from the chief of police. For the next year, I would like to propose to see if we can put these lights up at the school,” said DiGregorio at last week’s council meeting during the budget presentation. “It’s a safety situation,” he said. “The district and principal would like to have the lights up.” DiGregorio said he would like the borough to …

Peaceful Bus Program Promotes Respect at Knapp

Students learned about the importance of respecting buses and their bus drivers on Thursday

Respect for administrators and classmates doesn’t stop once Knapp Elementary students leave the front doors of the school. It continues and is enforced on the big yellow school bus. “There are rules in the school, and all the kids know the rules,” said principal Joe Mazza. “When they go out on the buses – and depending on the skill set, there may be inconsistencies – they are bridging the school rules from school to bus.” The school held a Peaceful Bus Program for most of the day Thursday; it enforces anti-bullying and respect for the school bus driver and school bus rules. The program is an offshoot of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. “We support the bus drivers, who are the persons in charge of safety,” Mazza said. “Respect goes …
