Incumbents Sobel, Dunigan Ousted in GOP Primary

It was an upset for the Republican incumbents Sobel in Ward Two and and Dunigan in Ward Three in the Lansdale Borough Council Primary. Tom Work beat out Sobel, and Peter Schmitt and Walter Brown III were able to clinch the nominations for the two seats.

Incumbent Republicans Mike Sobel, in Ward Two, and Dan Dunigan, in Ward Three, have been unofficially ousted in the Republican Primary for Lansdale Borough Council. Lansdale Parking Authority member Tom Work unofficially received the most votes for the one open seat on council in Ward Two: 223 votes to Sobel's 65 votes in all three precincts, or 77.4 percent of the vote. While Democrat Kathleen Becker was on the ballot in Ward Two, she withdrew her candidacy before the Primary. "I got my butt kicked," said Sobel. "It wasn't even close. As I stated in letters and other things I put out there, it's not up to me. It's up to the voters to make a decision and obviously today they spoke."  Sobel said he will not hang his head for anything he did…

Friends of Lansdale Candidates Victorious in Ward Three Primary

It was two Friends of Lansdale-endorsed candidates versus two Lansdale First-endorsed candidates in the Ward Three race in the Tuesday Primary.

As Lansdale First Political Action Committee treasurer and current Councilman Denton Burnell spoke his first words over the phone Tuesday night after the Democratic and Republican Primaries, one could sense the disappointment in his voice. "It wasn’t a good night for my people," the Democratic councilman said. It was a good night for at least one of the Lansdale First-endorsed candidates—Mary Fuller, who unofficially won the Democratic ticket in the Primary Tuesday. The same cannot be said for Democrats Bob Willi and Richard Strahm. It seems having more than $8,000 in financial backing from the Montgomery County Democratic Committee helped propel Friends of Lansdale PAC-endorsed Liz Troy and Leon Angelichio to clinch the top two votes in …

My sincere condolences to Mr. Angelichio and his family on the passing of Leon's father. Altough we have political differences, a tragedy like this transcends anything political. I will keep the Angelichio family in my thoughts and prayers.   more ›

Incumbent Democrat Fuller Wins Lansdale Ward One Primary

Friends of Lansdale-endorsed Jeff Howard received the second-most votes in the Democratic Primary. There are two open seats in the ward, heading to November.

The woman who brought fireworks to Lansdale heads to November on the Democratic ticket, along with Friends of Lansdale PAC-endorsed Jeff Howard, following the Tuesday Primary for Lansdale Borough Council. Fuller and Howard will face Republican challengers Michele Coyle and Jean Fritz, and Independent Jason Van Dame, for the two seats in Ward One in November. According to unofficial Montgomery County Election results, Fuller received 103 votes, or 37.8 percent, of all three precincts in Ward One in Lansdale. Howard received 101 votes, or 37 percent, and third Democratic challenger Joe Wolf received 68 votes.  "I can let my breath out now," Fuller said late Tuesday night. Low Turnout, High Expectations in Lansdale Council Races

Candidates in all three wards in the borough were on the ballot Tuesday.

Lansdale Borough Council Ward One incumbent Democrat Mary Fuller braved the hot afternoon—and an early morning—to meet and greet voters at the polls at Penndale Middle School Tuesday. "I would have liked to have seen a greater turnout," she said, "but I'm hoping people will come later." Fuller is being challenged for her seat and another Ward One seat by two Democrats, Jeff Howard and Joe Wolf. "This is typical of a Primary at the local level," she said of the slow day. "As I go door to door, I say, 'This is the one where your vote counts more than anything.' It all comes down to the numbers that come out." The woman who brought fireworks to Lansdale, as head of nonprofit Discover Lansdale,  trustd her record and service to put her over …

Ducklings Rescued from Drain by Upper Gwynedd PD, Public Works

The nine ducklings were trapped in a storm drain at North Penn Marketplace in Upper Gwynedd Monday morning.

If the mother duck could talk, she'd quack "Thank you." As she looked on, guarded, crews from Upper Gwynedd Public Works and officers from Upper Gwynedd Township Police rescued nine ducklings that were crying for help from a storm drain Monday morning. According to police, the storm drain was within the North Penn Marketplace shopping center at Valley Forge Road and Sumneytown Pike. Upper Gwynedd Township Public Works responded with a front-end loader, a bucket and a piece of wood. The wood was used to cover the drain pipe so the ducklings would not venture further into the drain pipe, police said. Public Works employees John Maguire and Howard "Peanut" Quinn lifted off the grate cover, blocked the pipe and jumped inside the drain. There, …

Dems, GOP Battle in Lansdale Ward Three Primary

Three Republicans and four Democrats are vying for the top two votes in the Primary for the two open seats in Ward Three.

For the past couple months, three Republicans and four Democrats in Lansdale have been going back and forth at each other to entice their registered party members to vote for them in the Primary. The trophy: Two seats on Ward Three in Lansdale Borough. On the Republican side, incumbent Dan Dunigan—who did not receive the endorsement from the Lansdale Republican Club—is vying for re-election against newcomers Walter W. "Cory" Brown III and Peter Schmitt. Both Brown III and Schmitt received the endorsement from Lansdale Republican Club. Whoever receives the top two votes among Dunigan, Brown III and Schmitt at the close of polls on Tuesday will move on to challenge the top two victors from the Democratic primary in Ward Three. The Democratic…

Actually, Mr. Szekely, what you said was "With a large surplus in reserves, taxes are not increased to keep pace with inflation. The previous Council rode out their terms with a decrease in reserves and the new Council-- in order to correct the deficit spending -- had to raise taxes." Clearly you admitted that a tax raise was necessary to correct deficit spending. Which is certainly correct. Of …   more ›

Sobel Could Be Back In With a Primary Win

With no Democratic challengers, incumbent Republican Mike Sobel and Lansdale Parking Authority member Tom Work are contending for the one open seat in Ward Two.

He's led the 311 W. Main St. Task Force, he oversees the public safety committee and he's running for re-election. With the Friends of Lansdale-endorsed Kathleen Becker dropping out of the race in Lansdale's Ward Two, incumbent Republican Mike Sobel was a shoe-in to win a second term on Lansdale Borough Council. Step in Republican contender Tom Work, a member of the Lansdale Parking Authority. Work received the endorsement from the Lansdale Republican Club; Incumbent Sobel did not receive an endorsement from the borough Republicans. On Tuesday, the one open council seat in Ward Two in Lansdale Borough will, in theory, go to whomever receives the most votes from registered Republicans in Ward Two by the close of the polls. It could be …

Lansdale IS Great!

Mike Sobel deserves to win. Doesn't anyone else see the irony of the Lansdale Republican Club? Four years ago, Tom Work was the PRESIDENT of Citizens For a Better Lansdale. The group the republicans love to bash. But now they're all for him? Makes no sense. Vote Sobel!   more ›
