High Temps, Thunderstorm Threats This Week

We should hit the upper 70s by mid-week and into the 80s by the weekend

Last Sunday's coastal storm and its resulting hangover of cool weather in our region resulted in eight straight days of below-average temperatures, which is the longest such stretch we've seen since the end of October.  This spell of March-like cool has about one more day in it before we have a quick rebound in weather when the pattern shifts, rather markedly, Monday night. That's when a warm front will lift through the region, spreading some showers and storms as it passes through. The forecast for Tuesday features optimistic highs in the upper half of the 70s - that assumes early departure by the rainfall and the return of sunshine.  If clouds linger, however, and the warm front doesn't push far enough north, temperatures could be a good…

Roller Coaster Ride of Weather

Today will be a random spike of warm weather before it all slopes back down to near-average temperatures for the rest of the week

Mother Nature needs to get her act together because the weather seems to be giving us all types of seasons. Last week was just a tease of summer. Yet, like winter, Ms. Nature will again make us flip into a double loop of unexpected weather. The past couple days made us realize that summer is still a couple months away and March is not over yet. The difference about today is that the high-pressure system that floated above us Monday and Tuesday will scurry to the south as a low-pressure system passes to our north. To better understand what I am talking about: When a low-pressure system, most commonly known as a mid-latitude cyclone, approaches an area, a front of cold air is on its way. Right before a cold front reaches the region, a warm …

Mother Nature is Rushing For Summer

This year was the fourth warmest winter in recorded history, and it may not be surprising to say the same for this spring as temperatures soar into the 70s this week

Is it time to open the pools already? That wouldn't be a great idea, but it does feel like they should be. The official pring equinox, or first day of spring, is next Tuesday and I think Mother Nature is trying to skip right over to summer. Temperatures this week will be about 10 to 20 degrees above average. I don't think records will be broken in this area, but several places in the eastern half of the nation will. The region will flirt with the 70 degree mark this week, but can reach as high as the mid-70s. Today will be beautiful with sunny skies and a high temperature hugging the 70 degree mark. A perfect breeze from the west blowing at 5 to 10 mph allows for perfect mid-springlike weather. As the sun sets this evening, temperatures …

More Soaking Weather In Store For The Weekend

The sun will try its best to poke through the clouds today, but more rain is expected to put a damper on any plans for the weekend

March did not really come marching in, but it it's definitely leaving some muddy bootprints. Even though it's the second day of the month, the sun seems shy as it hides behind the clouds. My spring break from college starts today, and this is not what I want to see; my hopes are high for a potentially beautiful pattern next week. Today will start out in the upper 30s with mostly cloudy skies. The sun will try its best to come out in the afternoon, which can bring the high temperatures to the low 50s. If the sun is too shy to come out, the temperatures may not reach the 50 degree mark. By the afternoon commute, clouds will quickly take over and thicken as a storm system approaches from the southwest.  Before I carry on, if you plan on …

Is the Weekend Winter Storm A Bust?

Today and tomorrow will be pleasant with sunshine and a few clouds, but will a major winter storm plow the region on Sunday?

After saying this several times, I am going to say it again: This winter is really frustrating. For the last couple of days, several weather enthusiasts like myself have been baffled with the possibility of a snowstorm this Sunday. Every model after the next has been part of this unsettling war, in that predicting such a system is extremely difficult and risky. The problem is warning the public about such a system.  On a lighter note, the storm is most likely going to move a little south making our region escape such a major impact on snow accumulations. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news for the snow lovers out there. Today will be nice with clouds breaking way to partly sunny skies in the afternoon. High temperatures are expected to …

Will This Week Finally Bring Us Some Snow?

Temperatures will remain mild for today and tomorrow, but winter will strike back for a chance to possibly bring us some wintry precipitation

As everyone awakes from a late night of partying post the Super Bowl, it is now time to get back on schedule. The weather this week will be on a rollercoaster as warm temperatures are fighting against a massive cold air mass from the north pushing its way southward. From the looks of things, it seems that cooler air will hang around for a while. To start things off, Monday morning's commute was chilly, calm, and clear with temperatures around 30 degrees. The afternoon will be pleasant with sunny skies and high temperatures in the upper 40s. Some areas could reach the lower 50s. As night falls, expect mostly clear skies and temperatures in the mid 30s. Tuesday will almost be the same as today, with mostly sunny skies and high temperatures …

Beautiful Weekend In Store for the Philly Region

Unseasonably warm temperatures raided the region earlier this week, but the weekend will bring cooler temperatures as well as sunny skies

I hope nobody got too comfortable this week, as a rare event took place on Tuesday and Wednesday when temperatures soared into the lower 60s. Many areas either tied or fell short by just a hair from record high temperatures. This winter has been known to play tricks on us: for example, the Nor'easter that shattered snowfall records which occured on October 27 to October 28. After that, "snow" was more like a "no" as the region recieved around an extra 3 to 5 inches since then. Being a snow-lover myself, I find this winter to be quickly depressing.  As far as this weekend goes, a high-pressure system over the Ohio Valley region will bring mostly sunny to clear skies today, as high temperatures will rise to the mid 40s. Don't forget, it is …

Spring Arrives In a Hurry, but Punxsutawney Phil Might Disagree!

Mild temperatures will strike the region, making the end of January into February a bust for winter

As this winter continues to disappoint the snow lovers out there, this week's weather won't grant any wishes, as a warm front from the south brings unseasonably mild temperatures to the region. Temperatures on Tuesday will soar into the upper 50s due to a large high pressure system that is passing over the south moving northeastward pretty quickly. The skies will be mostly sunny allowing for a beautiful day that will make you say, "It's not even February yet!" As the sun sets, clouds will build up in the area as a cold front from the west will bring showers around Wednesday's morning rush hour. Off and on showers will continue throughout the day, with temperatures hugging the 60 degree mark. As night approaches, the cold air will creep …

Near 60s Thru Mid-Week, But a Stormy Super Bowl?

Warm weather continues thru Wednesday, with storms near the end of the week.

I give credit to my dad for giving some inspiration to me for the first lines of this week's column. While giving me a hand on Sunday getting furniture from a family friend, he took a look and commented that it looked and felt like a Fall day outside. I mused a few times in December that it was a November-in-December type month ... who knew that late January would feature a return to November ... or perhaps a surge to March and April. You can choose which way you'd like to lean. It won't last, however. Temperatures the last couple of weeks have been rather warm in the Southern US -- running 10 degrees above average in spots since the middle of the month. Despite an early week shot of chill across the South and East, that shot of chill …
