Gallery: Inaugural Knights for Life Beef and Beer

The nonprofit organization held its first major fundraiser Saturday night at Presentation of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church in Towamencin

The nonprofit organization Knights For Life — which provides donations and support to North Penn families and individuals suffering a loss or battling an illness — held its first-ever Beef and Beer Fundraiser Saturday night at Presentation of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church on Allentown Road in Towamencin. The beef and beer was inspired by a prior successful beef and beer in 2012 called "Miketallica," which raised money for the family of the late Mike Saks, a North Penn graduate and former teacher.  Saks and the late Chris Melchior — both died from cancer — were the North Penn Knights "for life" whom inspired friends and classmates to form Knights For Life. Inaugural Knights for Life Beef & Beer Fundraiser Tonight

The Knights for Life Foundation is a resource for the North Penn community that assists individuals and families who are facing issues with health or who experienced a profound loss. The foundation was made in memory of Mike Saks and Chris Melchior

Once a North Penn Knight, always a North Penn Knight. Knights For Life is a nonprofit organization that began around 2009, when co-founder Steve Melchior's brother, Chris, succumbed to colon cancer at age 46. Then, three years later, former North Penn teacher Mike Saks, a closed friend of 1985 grad Chris Melchior, succumbed to a brain tumor in January 2012.   In death, these North Penn Knights are renewing lives. "The families felt such a great sense of strength from their community and friends," said Knights For Life member Karen Rowland. "We felt that everyone that is going through something deserves that same feeling. We got together through Facebook and came up with Knights For Life." Knights For Life co-founder Scott Payne said …

The nonprofit group, formed by North Penn High alumni, raises funds to support individuals and families facing profound loss or a crisis

The Knights For Life Horseshoe Tournament fundraiser Sunday afternoon was a success, bringing out more than 100 people who got behind the nonprofit's mission of distributing funds for individuals and families facing a crisis or loss. The nonprofit was started by North Penn High School alumni. According to Jennifer Lawson of The Reporter in Lansdale, the group began around 2009 when co-founder Steve Melchior's brother, Chris, succumbed to colon cancer at 46.  Melchior told Lawson the group was also influenced by the death of the 1985 North Penn grad's close friend, Mike Saks. Saks succumbed to a brain tumor in January of this year.  According to Lawson, the horseshoe tournament was the group's second event. A wiffle ball competition was the…

Former NP Teacher Saks Succumbs to Tumor, Benefit Continues

Mike Saks was a physics teacher at North Penn High School in the mid-90s, as well as a coach for wrestling, softball and tennis

Lansdale native Mike Saks was a wrestling star in the mid-1980s at North Penn, accomplishing the 1984 sectional championship in his weight class and being the 1985 state qualifier in his weight class during his senior year. He would go on to coach wrestling at the high school, in addition to coaching girls' softball and girls' tennis. He was also a physics teacher at North Penn High School in the mid-90s, and even taught math and coached at Pennridge High School later in his career. Like a good wrestling match, Saks would face a beast not once, but twice, in his life. He was able to pin and beat a brain tumor almost five years ago. In an unfortunate rematch, and nearly an eight-month battle, Saks succumbed to a brain tumor Monday morning …

Mr saks was a great teacher, though math was never my subject he was always a cool guy. He actually asked me to babysit his kids senior year so he and his wife could chaperone the prom. He definitely lived his life to the fullest, he always told us stories about skydiving and the phillies and always referred back to metallica. It's been 2 or 3 years since I've had him, but he definitely left an …   more ›
