Local EMS, Mental Health Services Respond to Potential Sequestration

Should Congress not act by March 1, a series of automatic cuts will take effect that affect thousands of middle class jobs, and cut vital services for children, seniors, people with mental illness and our men and women in uniform

If the sequester goes through on March 1, it could mean massive cuts to emergency services, mental health services, school funding, senior citizen services and more. Locally, the various National Alliance on Mental Illness programs continue to advocate for change before March 1. If sequestration goes into effect, more than 373,000 mentally ill adults and children could go untreated. The result could be homelessness, increased crime and increased hospitalizations. Carol Caruso, executive director of NAMI Montgomery County, said mental health and substance abuse programs could be cut by about 5 percent. NPHS Honors Literature at First 'Lit Fest'

The Knight Crier at North Penn High School covered the events of the first-ever literature festival in the auditorium on Feb. 21

On Thursday, Feb. 21, juniors in North Penn High School's Honors English program celebrated prose and literature during its first-annual "Lit Fest." Students re-enacted scenes, competed in drama readings and a book cover design contest were just some of the events. According to Knight Crier executive editor Bridget Phillips, the event emphasized "literature’s position in the incredible English curriculum in our school and overall district." North Penn Redistricts Middle School Boundaries

Jennifer Lawson of The Reporter wrote that the school board voted Thursday to amend the boundaries that affect about 48 students attending North Wales and Gwyn-Nor elementary schools

In September, about 48 elementary students will head to Pennbrook instead of Penndale Middle School, now that North Penn School Board has approved a new redistricting plan Thursday. According to Jennifer Lawson of The Reporter, the students attend North Wales and Gwyn-Nor elementary schools, and are at present part of the Penndale Middle School boundary. The areas affected by the redistricting include around North Wales and Morris roads, and North Wales and Welsh roads. Read more at this link.

Montgomery Flex Charter School Not Appealing to State

North Penn School District this month denied three applications for charter schools. One applicant, Montgomery Flex, will not be appealing the decision to the Pennsylvania Department of Education

Montgomery Flex Charter School representative Tim Sager said appealing to the state Department of Education following the denial of North Penn School Board of its and two other charter school applications is not an option at present. "After careful consideration, we have decided not to file for an appeal to the Pennsylvania Department of Education. This is in large part due to the cost of launching such an effort," Sager wrote in an email. Sager said Montgomery Flex, in an appeal, must first get 1,000 signatures from North Penn residents. Those signatures must then be reviewed and approved by the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas. "At this stage, the school district can challenge the veracity of the signatures by subpoenaing the …

North Penn Board Says No to Charter Schools

Three separate organizations filed applications to form charter schools within the boundaries of North Penn School District. The Reporter's Jen Lawson broke the story of the board's denial of all three applications

No charter schools coming to North Penn School District. That's the consensus following votes by the school board Tuesday night, after its members denied three separate charter school applications, according to Jennifer Lawson of The Reporter. Lawson reported that each of the three applicants will appeal. The three applicants seeking charter schools in the district were: Montgomery Flex is the only one of the group that went through this process before. Its initial application was denied by the school board, as it did not favor the cyber aspect of the school's curriculum. Inaugural Knights for Life Beef & Beer Fundraiser Tonight

The Knights for Life Foundation is a resource for the North Penn community that assists individuals and families who are facing issues with health or who experienced a profound loss. The foundation was made in memory of Mike Saks and Chris Melchior

Once a North Penn Knight, always a North Penn Knight. Knights For Life is a nonprofit organization that began around 2009, when co-founder Steve Melchior's brother, Chris, succumbed to colon cancer at age 46. Then, three years later, former North Penn teacher Mike Saks, a closed friend of 1985 grad Chris Melchior, succumbed to a brain tumor in January 2012.   In death, these North Penn Knights are renewing lives. "The families felt such a great sense of strength from their community and friends," said Knights For Life member Karen Rowland. In the wake of the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut on Dec. 14, North Penn School District has begun scrutinizing its security and intruder drills at each school. According to Jennifer Lawson of The Reporter, North Penn will be boosting its security at school entrances. It is also planning on increasing the number of intruder drills from two per year. Superintendent Curt Dietrich will discuss security plans and protocols with parents and taxpayers at a community forum on Jan. 7 at 6:45 p.m. in North Penn High School’s auditorium.
