Van Dame Appointed to Lansdale Council, Will Serve Out Veep's Term

When Paul Clemente resigned from his role in December, council requested submissions of interest to fill the Ward One vacancy and serve out the remainder of Clemente's term. Jason Van Dame was chosen over Jeff Howard in a unanimous vote

With what councilmembers called "two great candidates" before them and with a decision that was "like splitting hairs," Jason Van Dame, a fourth-generation Lansdalian, was appointed unanimously to fill the vacated Ward One seat on borough council Wednesday night. Van Dame and resident Jeff Howard were the only two Ward One residents who submitted letters of interest in December to fill the vacancy left by a resigning Paul Clemente. Van Dame, a registered Independent, will serve out Clemente's remaining term, ending Dec. 31, 2013. He would then need to run in the election for a chance to keep his seat. "Yes, at this point, I do plan to run in the fall," he said. Van Dame doesn't have an agenda. "I want to ensure that the borough continues …

Two Ward One Residents Submit Interests in Council Vacancy

The vacant seat left by the resignation of former Lansdale Borough Council Vice President Paul Clemente is up for grabs. The borough accepted letters of interest until Dec. 31, 2012, with an appointment on Jan. 16

Come January 16, the battle for the open seat on Lansdale Borough Council comes down to two Ward One residents: Jason Van Dame and Jeffrey Howard. Council President Matt West informed Patch that the borough received two letters of interest for the open Ward One seat, vacated by the resignation on Dec. 31, 2012 of Vice President Paul Clemente. Van Dame is a resident of Jenkins Avenue. Howard is a resident of South Chestnut Street. West said that, as of Wednesday, there are no plans to extend the due date. Council will appoint either Van Dame or Howard to the vacant seat at its Jan. 16 action meeting. Whoever is appointed will fulfill Clemente's term, ending Dec. 31, 2013.

Ward One Lansdale Council Vacancy Letters Due Monday

Effective Monday, Lansdale Borough Council Vice President Paul Clemente resigns from council. Letters of interest from Ward One citizens wishing to fill the vacancy are due by close of business Monday

Effective Monday, Lansdale Borough Council has a vacancy — and letters of interest are due to borough hall by close of business. Council Vice President Paul Clemente this month submitted a letter of resignation, effective Monday. Per announcement of Council President Matt West, the borough will receive letters of interest from Ward One residents interested in filling the council vacancy.  Interested residents must outline what his or her vision is for Lansdale, and how his or her involvement will help achieve that vision. Residents of Ward One must have lived at their current address for one year or more in order to be eligible for council, West said. Interested residents are encouraged to submit a resume and a list of relevant experience…

Lansdale Council Vice President Submits Resignation

Effective Dec. 31, 2012, Lansdale resident Paul Clemente will resign from council. Council President Matt West said the borough is accepting applications for appointment in January to fulfill the remainder of Clemente's 2013 term

Effective Dec. 31, Lansdale Council Vice President Paul Clemente will end his tenure as councilman. Clemente suddenly announced at the council action meeting Wednesday night that he has submitted his resignation. "I will resign from Lansdale Borough Council for personal and career reasons. I've enjoyed serving our community over the last three years, and I'm privileged to have been a part of so many substantial, positive changes in our town," Clemente said. "I wish council and the borough the best of luck and continued success in the future." Council President Matt West said he accepted the resignation Wednesday morning. "My response to him was, 'I accept the resignation with a heavy heart.' I would like to thank you for the time, effort …

Town Hall: When Do You Bang the Gavel on Resident Comments?

Residents and borough officials discussed the results of a recent borough council meeting where a resident attacked a council member and vice versa

At the last council meeting on May 16, resident Joe Cionzynski fired accusations at council Vice President Paul Clemente, including walking out during Cionzynski's public comment at a past council meeting. Clemente fired back, calling Cionzynski's diatribes "vitriolic" and calling him "a joke" because of his actions during council meetings. The spectacle was brought up at the Lansdale town hall session this month at the borough parks and recreation building, where it was discussed if it is fair for council and residents to cross a line in a public meeting. It wasn't the first time accusations have been thrown at council members, public or otherwise. In the past, residents have accused councilmembers and officials of accepting free SEPTA …

Vote on Electronic Access of Lansdale Meeting Packets Gets Nasty

Lansdale council held a fiery debate over making council meeting packets available online prior to the meeting. One resident was called "a joke" by one councilman

If a scab is healed, don't repick it. If the Lansdale Administration and Finance Committee decided it doesn't want the meeting information packets given to council to be published online in advance of a meeting, don't bring it up again. Councilman Steve Malagari learned that the hard way Wednesday night. And Councilman Paul Clemente let one resident - Joe Cionzynski of Perkiomen Avenue - know exactly what he thought of him: he's a joke. Last month, councilman Rich DiGregorio made a motion for the administration and finance committee to vet making council meeting information packets available for view and download online in advance of a meeting. Council voted for such an effort. It was announced by committee chairman Dan Dunigan on May 2 …

I completely agree Chassity. AND Paul Clemente doesn't even live in the borough anymore. He lives in Blue Bell. He is in debt up to his eyeballs. I find it disgusting at how he treats people in these meetings like they are all his plebs. What has he ever done to demand being treated like the king. UGH!   more ›

New Council, New Committee Assignments

Jack Hansen taking over as chair of Department of Community Development, Denton Burnell taking reins as chair of Public Works Committee

The announcement of new Lansdale Borough committee assignments last week revealed some new leadership under the 2012 council. Council President Matt West said the committee assignments were finalized two weeks ago, but ran through each one to "memorialize" the appointments. Dan Dunigan will remain as chair of the Administration and Finance Committee. Joining him will be council vice president Paul Clemente and West. There is no change to assignments from 2011. The Parks and Recreation Committee will be chaired again by Mary Fuller. Joining her are new councilman Steve Malagari and councilman Rich DiGregorio. Malagari and DiGregorio replace resigning councilwoman Anne Scheuring and councilman Mike Sobel, respectively. Public Works Committee…

Show Us the Money

The 311 W. Main Task Force spent two hours discussing how things could look inside the former arts center, but how will they fund it all?

The Lansdale 311 W. Main Task Force spent 105 minutes Tuesday night discussing green room locations, portable dressing rooms, bathroom layouts, sloped theaters, soundboard setups, expanding theaters to more than 300 seats, moveable chairs, flexible mutli-purpose theaters, food courts and art. At the end, borough council vice president Paul Clemente said he supported the arts, and the efforts are all well and good. Then, he asked a big question: Where's the money? "I have a simple question that piggybacks off of (Montgomery County Planner Brian) O’Leary's, and that is this whole discussion seems to be very academic thus far because nobody’s talking about where the funding is coming from," Clemente said. "We have an estimate that’s $4.5 …

Lansdale Council Talking Trash in 2012

The concept of a single trash hauler for the borough will be explored beginning January 2012

Lansdale Borough is ready to talk trash – again – in 2012. Administration and finance chairman Dan Dunigan announced at the council work session Wednesday that the committee will consider the concept of a single trash hauler for the borough, prompted by Code Enforcement Committee Chairman Paul Clemente. “It’s widely used, and there are lots of benefits from the environmental/noise side of things to the impact on the streets with 35-ton trucks going down them,” Dunigan said. “Nothing is set in stone.” The last time the borough discussed the single trash hauler concept was between 2005 and 2007. In September 2005, the borough hired firm Gannett-Fleming to develop a Municipal Waste and Recycleables Collection study, which cost $17,500. Of …

Likewise! Plus, it's a service that every residential customer needs, so it's very likely the Borough negotiating as a single entity could command considerable discounts with an individual hauler. Let's see what the numbers say, but I'd be for it in principle.   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Hansen and DiGregorio are 'simply wrong' for council

Council Vice Chairman Paul Clemente scrutinizes the alleged "half-truths" in councilman Jack Hansen's Letter to the Editor

I am Vice-President of Lansdale Borough Council, and serve on the Administration & Finance Committee.  My colleague on Council and Chairman of that Committee, Dan Dunigan, recently noted the series of half-truths in Jack Hansen’s & Rich DiGregorio’s campaign information. Since they can’t seem to tell you, the residents of Lansdale, both sides of anything,  I’m going to address the continued half-truths of Hansen’s recent Letter to the Editor. Mssrs. Hansen and DiGregorio would lead you to believe that they alone secured several million dollars in various grants single-handedly.  They were two members of a nine-member Council and there was additional great effort from borough staff for sure, so it would appear that they had some help in …
