The nonprofit North Penn Police Activities League held a fundraiser Saturday to help 13-year-old Matthew Knoebel, of Lansdale, in his leukemia fight. The event featured 'Cops vs. Kids' basketball games, Old Navy fashion shows, raffles and more.
The first major event for the North Penn Police Activities League was a success Saturday at Penndale Middle School in Lansdale. More importantly, it brought some more support to the Knoebel family, as Penndale Middle Schooler Matthew, 13, continues to go through medical treatment for his leukemia diagnosis. "Right now, I'm a little overwhelmed," said North Penn PAL Executive Director Greg O'Brien. "All the people that showed up—the volunteers, the cops, the kids—it's a fantastic outpouring of community support." The North Penn PAL organized the fundraiser for Knoebel and his family, which featured three "Cops vs. Kids" basketball games, Old Navy fashion shows, raffles, silent auctions and more. In all three games, the North Penn middle …

North Penn Police Activities League, Old Navy, Penndale Middle School, Pat's Pizza, Centennial Blueprint, County Electric, LAFS, North Penn YMCA, a Broad Street Bully, an NBA champ and more come together for Matthew Knoebel, 13, on Saturday.
North Penn Police Activities League Executive Director Greg O'Brien was heading out the door to meet other volunteers at Penndale Middle School shortly before 6 p.m. Friday when he answered our call. O'Brien and others were meeting Friday to set up for Saturday's fundraiser for Lansdale teen Matthew Knoebel, who is fighting leukemia. "There's a lot of stuff going on," he said. "It's not the kind of thing where there is nothing to look at, nothing to see. There will be a constant flow of activity, with officers mingling with 50/50 tickets, a couple of sports guys, fashion shows and basketball games." That about summed up the highlights of tomorrow's fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Penndale Middle School in Lansdale. North Penn PAL has…

Councilman Jason Van Dame reported to the Lansdale Public Safety Committee of a resident complaint about their driveway being blocked by Penndale Middle School teachers and faculty, according to Van Dame.
Lansdale Police will investigate what they can do to ease parking problems being faced by a resident on the 500 block of Penn Street, near Penndale Middle School. "Regularly, his driveway is blocked by cars parking along there," said Councilman Jason Van Dame during this month's public safety committee meeting. "He called the department many times to come out and ticket the cars blocking him. But is there any signage to recommend?" Lansdale Police Chief Robert McDyre said the police could recommend painting of the curb yellow to help those situations. "It is not marked well," Van Dame said. "There's a telephone pole (in front of the house). You go during the school day and you can see cars parked up close to the driveway." Van Dame told…

The math classes at the Lansdale middle school know that Food + Donations = Happiness
Food + Donating = Happiness. This was one equation that 26 Penndale Middle Schoolers will remember for life, following their delivery of more than 2,900 canned goods to Manna on Main Street Friday morning. "Throughout the school, all math classes did a canned food drive," said Sara Heil, Penndale eighth grade math teacher. "We made bar graphs for each of the classes and each student filled in one box per can, to see which class could bring in the most. The winning class is the second-period class. They brought in 234 cans. My five classes overall brought in 825 cans. Overall, for all three grades, they brought in 2,929 cans. We filled 67 boxes and brought them over in four vehicles." Heil said it started 11 years ago with just her math …

Matthew Knoebel is a Penndale seventh grader currently battling leukemia at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Knoebel's neighbors came together to hold a bake sale fundraiser in Lansdale Saturday
In 1974, Hatfield resident Melissa Garvin was much like Lansdale resident Matthew Knoebel. Garvin, pushing 43, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at age 3. Knoebel, 12, a Penndale Middle School seventh-grader, is battling Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "I'm a longtime survivor myself," Garvin said. "I was diagnosed before my fourth birthday. The reason I came was I saw the Patch article. I had to stop by. Cancer doesn't have to beat you." Garvin was one of more than 80 people that stopped at the Pine Street home of Brad and Kaitlin Horner Saturday for a bake sale and hot choclate fundraiser for Knoebel. Knoebel resides a block away on Poplar Street. The event was organized by four families…

Matthew Knoebel, 12, a Penndale Middle Schooler, is currently battling leukemia at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and a donor will be needed. A pancake fundraiser is set for Dec. 16 in Hatfield, as well as a hot chocolate sale
Penndale seventh-grader Matthew Knoebel is surrounded by love and generosity. The leukemia patient, 12, has spent a month on a hospital bed at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, but you can tell his mother, Christina Simpson, has made him feel at home. The hearts of the West Point-rooted Simpson family — sisters Christina and fiance Tom Coughlin, Kellie Roggio, of Upper Gwynedd, and Mary Aderman of Lansdale; brother Michael; and parents Mike and Sue — are much like their homelife (and Matthew's hospital room door): open. On Halloween, Knoebel and his mom spent the afternoon watching Jim Gaffigan’s “Beyond the Pale.” Later that night, Christina took a Halloween bag of candy to her son, which was donated through Altoona’s “Make a …
