Fire Shuts Down Skippack Pike During Rush Hour

Worcester and Skippack fire companies responded to a kitchen fire that caused damage throughout a two-apartment dwelling.

A kitchen fire snarled traffic on Skippack Pike at Valley Forge Road on Wednesday evening, closing off traffic in both directions for over an hour. Worcester Volunteer Fire Dept. and Skippack Fire Co. responded just after 5 p.m. to a call at 3031 Skippack Pike, a two-apartment, three-story building, according to Worcester Fire Chief David Cornish. Cornish said that a fire broke out in the kitchen of the upstairs apartment, and caused fire damage to the kitchen and smoke damage to the top two floors of the dwelling. The first floor apartment suffered only water damage. Firefighters were on the scene until after 6 p.m., blocking traffic to access the fire hydrant on the opposite side of the road, Cornish said. The tour was a part of the Lansdale Library's summer activity program.

As a part of the Lansdale Library's summer activities program, a small group of borough residents made the short trek over to the Peter Wentz Farmstead, an oft-overlooked historical site featuring a 260-year-old home that was once occupied by George Washington. "We were planning our summer program, and with this year's theme of 'One World, Many Stories,' I thought this would be a great place to visit," said Tom Meyer, Lansdale Library director, and first-time visitor to the farmstead. "I'm surprised by how big it is. I had no idea it was such a large piece of land." Volunteer guide Erin Sweeney began the tour outside of the Wentz home, detailing the family's arrival to the United States from Germany, and explaining that the family received…

The fire began on the first floor of the home shortly before 6:30 p.m

A fire broke out after 6 p.m. at the home of Matthew Budinko, located at 1876 Valley Forge Road near the intersection of Garfield Avenue in Towamencin. Jeremy Miller, who lives across the street from the home, saw smoke and ran over to see what was going on. "I came out to the lawn and saw smoke.  My neighbor Walt and I thought they were burning leaves," said Miller.  "Once we were in the backyard, we could hear the fire alarm going off, and we could see smoke coming out of the vents of the roof." The two neighbors banged on the doors of the home, making sure no one was inside.  A few second later, Walt dialed 9-1-1. Units from Towamencin, North Penn, and Worcester fire companies arrived shortly after to put out the one-alarm fire. "As the…
