  • On the article $1 Per Hour Meter Parking Taxing on Lansdale Businesses

There's nothing wrong with charging $1 for parking on Main St. What is wrong is that the borough is using intensely outdated meters that only accept coins! Modern meters/pay kiosks that accept coins, bills, credit card, mobile, etc. are prolific enough by this point that there's no excuse not to use those instead. If the borough really wants to be serious about leading the way into the future, they shouldn't neglect modernizing parking while they're at it.

As to the note about businesses being closed on First Fridays - this is a big problem, not to mention stupid business. Why not be open when you have thousands of customers walking past your door? Many of the businesses along Main St., especially the parts/thrift stores we have in abundance, are precisely the sort of places that people won't visit unless they have time to kill strolling around the neighborhood - or for some reason need to go to these stores to get something they can't find at Lowe's or AutoZone. Chance visits can lead to future business, businesses should realize that.

  • On the article Strip Searches Allowed in Montco Schools?

I can't see any reason why any school staff would have to strip search a student, or for that matter, be legally able to do so. Considering the vast array of laws against physical contact with minors (not to mention school policies on the topic of contact with students), I think most staff would be terrified to try it, even if the student is 18+. Not to mention, if it's severe enough to warrant a physical search, it's severe enough to already have contacted the police, who then can obtain the necessary warrant to proceed with a search and make an arrest if necessary. By that point, it's out of the school's jurisdiction anyway, so there's no reason for any school to have a policy that does anything other than prohibit strip searches.

Well said, Mayor! The borough hall adds a much needed charm to the center of town and really should be preserved until such a point arrives as there is simply nothing more that can be done to save it. We are nowhere near that point yet.

Besides the historical worthiness of saving the building, it also provides a focal counterpoint to Main Street. If the rest of this proposal goes through, and Railroad Ave is turned into pedestrian space, and borough hall fixed up - then all you need it someone to fix up the old railroad depot and its lot and you'd have a good anchor to the S. Broad corridor that could help spur (re-)development on that side of town - providing the borough another asset for its continuing growth.

That's always the problem with this. It's a great idea, but the implementation is terrible. There are far too few collections, and even when you do get to one, you often have to spend an hour in line. It's just not worthwhile unless you have a lot of stuff to dispose of. So instead people consider that even under the best intentions, their options are to either 1) track down a drop off, travel there, then wait in ridiculously long lines to dispose of their items, or 2) simply put it in the trash, with no real consequence for doing so.

I feel for your old building woes, but borough hall should really be saved at all costs. Even if it's just keeping the shell around as an open space - maybe an atrium or display area since it has those great windows. The brick can be repointed, the masonry walls supplemented with new structure, the roof replaced, cupola fixed, insides gutted, but just don't tear it down.

On the other hand, I'm all for turning Railroad Ave into a pedestrian/access street.

If the PD really has this much free time on their hands, how about spending it nabbing everyone making illegal left turns onto and off of Main St.? It would be far more lucrative, and probably more likely to save lives as well!

Well that's certainly more informative than the notice Morgan taped to the front door to announce the changeover.

Also begs the question of what happened to Reinhold, who up until Wednesday gave every impression of running the place.
