Philadelphia, PA

Today I am grateful for Philadelphia, PA.  Looking at the city from across the Delaware at Camden, NJ, on a day when the sun peeped out for a few seconds after a long, dark winter, I got a new appreciation.

We’ve traveled a lot, both internationally (John has traveled to more countries than I have, but not by much) and like Dinah Shore, we’ve “seen the USA in our. . .” well, not our Chevrolet, but our Kia, or Ford or whatever we had at the time.  We drove from Lansdale to Phoenix a few years ago to move my mom, then drove a van full of her stuff to Madison, WI.  We drove to visit a son when he lived in Oklahoma.  We drive to Wisconsin almost every year to see family and friends.  We’ve driven to Vermont and Maine and Canada and Mexico.

Each time we enter another state (not including our ever-present state-of-confusion) we marvel at how unusual, different, pretty it is.  After the month long trek to settle my mom, we were finally heading back home exhausted and numb.  As we entered Pennsylvania we looked at each other and said almost in unison, “you have to go some to beat Pennsylvania.”  The whole state is simply breathtaking and Philly is no exception.

When friends visiedt a few weeks ago from Virginia, we had to pick them up from 30th Street Train Station, an unbelievable building that marks transportation from years gone by.  The drive along the Schulykill (skoo-kill) River is gorgeous.  If you’ve never seen pictures of Philly, you have to Google Boathouse Row.  Rowing crews from at least five universities and private rowing clubs meet there.  A blink away from them is the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where Rocky ran up the steps on the city side of the building.  That’s nice, but the building from the river side looks like it belongs in Rome or Athens.   Spectacular.

Last weekend, looking at the Philly skyline from New Jersey, the Ben Franklin Bridge majestically tying the two states together, I felt proud and happy that I live near such an amazing city.  Philly. . .with all its phlaws. . .is still great!
