Earth Day Comes to Montgomery Mall

Free shredding, gardening and green living tips and guest speakers highlight all-day event

Montgomery Township Environmental Advisory Committee and Montgomery Mall host the annual  at  from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Here's what you can check out today:

  • Free residential paper shredding and free electronic and equipment recycling by 1-800-GOT JUNK in the D parking lot from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Penndale Middle School's ENACT Club will be distributing 500 energy-efficient lightbulbs and educating the public about energy conservation, according to a press release.

    At present, the students are running a paper recycling program at the school and the Educational Services Center.

    The ENACT Club meets every Tuesday at Penndale Middle School. It is open to all seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade students.

  • Demonstrations on composting, raised bed gardens, rain barrels, solar panels, stormwater management, energy conservation and children’s crafts in the lower level court of Macy’s from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • A display of energy-efficient cars

  • Guest speaker Richard Whiteford, of Climate Reality Project, will discuss “An Inconvenient Truth” at 1 p.m.

  • Guest speaker Anne Crowley, of PennFuture, will discuss “Environmental Action-Harrisburg and How You Can Make a Difference” at 2 p.m.

  • Guest speaker Thomas Schneider, North Penn School District manager of energy and operational efficiencies, will discuss “Save Big Money with Small Changes” at 3 p.m. The presentation will highlight the success of the district's energy management program.

    According to a press release, Schneider will be joined by students, staff and families involved with the district's Green Schools Program. 

The Green Schools Program is managed by the Alliance to Save Energy and sponsored by Direct Energy in Pennsylvania, according to the release

There are eight schools that participate in the Green Schools Program: ; Pennbrook and ; Bridle Path, Gwyn-Nor, Hatfield, A.M. Kulp and elementary schools. Each school has a green team comprising of teachers, custodians and students, and they identify energy problems and make recommendations for energy savings, according to a press release.
