Wegmans Coming to Montgomery Mall in Former Boscov's Site

Wegmans Food Market is coming to

Simon Property Group annouced Wednesday that it has entered into a ground lease with Wegmans to bring the supermarket to the former Boscov's space.

Ashley Pompei, Montgomery Mall marketing manager and business development, said there is no timeframe for Wegmans to open at the mall.

"An agreement has been signed. Yes, it's coming and we're excited for Wegmans to join the Montgomery Mall, as are they. I don't know of any other markets in malls in this area," Pompei said.

Jo Natale, Wegmans director of media relations, said the Boscov's site at Montgomery Mall would be demolished and a new store would be built in its place.

"It will be freestanding and will not be connected to the mall," Natale said.

Natale said the company recently signed the lease and now it's a question of making a plan and determining when the project can fit into the construction schedule.

"Our schedule for 2012 is set. We open three stores a year, and we committed to three we would open," Natale said. "We will continue to finalize design plans for this store, and then we will move forward with opening plans."

She said Wegmans will be opening a market in King of Prussia in April and two markets in Maryland in 2012.

"Of the few standalone stores we have, all are part of or near to large retail developments," she said. "Most are not connected to a mall, not that it hasn't been done."

According to Montgomery Mall General Manager John Ferreira, the supermarket would be up to 140,000 square feet. It will also be the first Wegmans store at a Simon property.
