Armed Robbery at Montgomery Mall Sunday Night

Police are looking for a Hispanic male suspect who robbed a GoldRush kiosk at the mall.

Montgomery Township police continue their search today for a Hispanic male involved in a Sunday night robbery of the Gold Rush kiosk at Montgomery Mall.

The suspect is described as Hispanic with a Spanish accent, medium build, in his mid-20s, 5-feet-10-inches to 6-feet tall. He has light stubble, described as a few days' growth, and a goatee.

Det. Ed Davies, of Montgomery Township police, said the robbery occurred around 5:45 p.m., 15 minutes before the mall closed.

The kiosk is located on the lower level of the mall.

"The female employee was in the process of closing when the male made his approach," Davies said. "He had been there earlier at 4 p.m."

At 4 p.m., the suspect produced a small bag of jewelry to have appraised with the idea of selling it for cash.

"She initiated the process by looking at the items. She did a test on it, and she gave him something in the $2,000 figure for the items," Davies said.

He said the suspect asked the employee if she holds that kind of cash at the kiosk. She told him they did because they buy gold on the spot, Davies said.

The suspect then handed the employee a Florida driver's license as identification in the process.

Davies said the employee could only remember the first name of "Roberto."

"There was no other information. There was no photocopy," Davies said. "It was definitely a Florida ID with a photo, but she only remembered the first name."

Davies said employees usually enter the ID information into the computer during a purchase.

After the employee gave the suspect the $2,000 quote, he told her he may be back and was going to shop around, Davies said.

"We learned that on the second approach, he had different clothing this time," Davies said. "He was wearing a solid black hoodie with the hood up."

One his first approach the suspect was wearing a black and yellow horizontal-striped shirt and blue jeans.

The suspect approached the employee, said, "I'll be taking the money now," and brandished a black semi-automatic handgun tucked in his pants at the waist.

Davies said he did not display the gun and point it at the employee.

"She proceeds to give him the cash in the drawer for the day," Davies said.

The suspect then fled on foot out the lower-level entrance by Time Out Arcade.

"He did not hide himself," Davies said. "It's wide open there."

Preliminary reports gave the amount of money robbed as $4,700. Davies did not confirm any amount, only stating that "several thousand dollars" were taken.

"We don't have much to go on," Davies said. "We will be canvassing the area today."

Davies said police do not know if the suspect fled in a car or got picked up.

"No witnesses have come forward," Davies said. "There was a bit of a time delay (on the investigation)."
