Sloat’s landlord found his growing operation in the attic, in which Sloat had sectioned off a part of the attic above his apartment with a black zippered tarp.

The attic was accessible to Sloat and his neighbors through an unlocked door in a common hallway. In January 2012, a neighbor complained of a fire hazard to police after finding electrical cords and lamps in the attic, according to the article.
