New Montgomery Police Recruit Fills Vacancy

A Mt. Pocono native beat out 324 applicants to grab the one vacancy at Montgomery Township Police left by the retirement of Chief Richard Brady.

John J. Rushin — a part-time cop with Spring City Police in Chester County — was sworn in as a recruit police officer by township supervisors on Dec. 17.

Brady retired on Sept. 30, after 42 years of service.

Rushin was the “top-ranked candidate for the position,” according to police Chief Scott Bendig.

Bendig said a recruit testing process was initiated in second quarter 2012, with 324 applicants vying for the position of recruit officer.

Rushin, a sergeant with the Philadelphia Warrant Unit, endured a hiring process that included a written exam, a physical agility test, a police oral review board, and a background investigation that included a polygraph, neighborhood interviews and employer interviews. Rushin was then interviewed by the township public safety committee.

 Rushin is a Penn State University-Altoona graduate and a Montgomery County Community College graduate. At MCCC, Rushin received Act 120 certification in April 2012.

According to an article by The Reporter, Supervisors Vice Chairman Joe Walsh said the township “wanted to be careful about who we brought in.”

“(Rushin) came in at the top of the list, and we interviewed him about a month ago and everybody was impressed by him,” Walsh said in the article.
