Phillies Fans React to Manager Charlie Manuel Firing

Phillies Hall of Famer and former Allentown IronPigs manager Ryne "Ryno" Sandberg was named manager of the Phillies Friday afternoon.

The 59th manager in all of baseball history to win 1,000 games was ousted as leader of the Philadelphia Phillies Friday afternoon and replaced with a Hall of Famer and former player.
Former Allentown IronPigs Manager Ryne Sandberg was named as manager of the National League East team by General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr.
"I had to make sure if the decision was made that Charlie would not be back, that he would know," Amaro Jr. said. "I don't see any reason why we should drag it out and have him sit the next 40 games. I don't think that's fair to him."
Manuel was adamant that the decision was not of his own accord.
"I didn't quit and I didn't resign," he said Friday.
In an appearance Friday, Sandberg said he reminded the Phillies that the next 42 games are meaningful.
"I wanted to remind the players that they are Major League players and are getting paid very well," he said.
Montgomeryville-Lansdale Patch took to our Facebook page to see what the readers and fans had to say about the change-up.
The main argument in Uncle Cholly's favor—just let him finish out the season.
"Crappy way to end Charlie's tenure, considering he's got a World Series win for Philly to his name. His contract was up at end of year and Sandberg was going to be in so why not wait—season is a loss at this point anyway," commented Jennifer Ashenfelter. "Winning is a team effort—not a one man show."
"They should've let him finish out his contract. The season is a wash anyway. Let him have some dignity," said Patty Duffy.
"He got cheated," said Stephanie Jefferies.
Steve Romano called it "classless" and a "complete travesty." "Blasphemy!" said one; "Lame," said another.
In fact, many readers felt either it should have been Amaro or that Amaro is next on the chopping block. One reader called him a "disrespectful toad."
"Ruben is a worse GM than he was a player and that's bad," said Thomas Hartnett, adding that Amaro had inherited current Phillies advisor and former manager Pat Gillick's work, and has slowly yet consistently destroyed it.
Some approved of Amaro's decision.
"Changes had to be made, perhaps Amaro will get one right before he gets the hook," said Joe Kaye.
Matt Walter said he hoped Sandberg "isn't held accountable for what happens during this upheaval."
Other readers praised and anticipated Sandberg's coaching style.
"At least Sandberg won't be giving the green light at third to players who can't beat the throw to home," said Scott Nyce.
